My family joined the 19th Ward Community Association when we moved to the neighborhood in 1992.
The association was originally formed to combat blockbusting in the 1960s. Its aim is to unite neighbors, increase pride in the neighborhood, and combat issues that all neighborhoods face such as crime and social problems like noise.
The CA serves several roles - supporting public safety (liaisons with police), merchant/citizen relationships, building-code issues and conflicts, and other issues that arise in the neighborhood. The association helps coordinate the maintenance of the community's shared gardens. Every year they sponsor the Square Fair (first weekend in June) with merchants, activities, performances, and other celebrations of the neighborhood. It's usually preceded by a parade.
The association also encourages neighbors to socialize with events including the Candlelight Dinners in February, where neighbors attend potluck with neighbors they haven't met yet.
