Mission: Enhancing the health of under-resourced communities, one family at a time. 1 grain to 1000 grains nourishes the aspirations of families, as it collaborates to vitalize the communities they live in. Through its programs families discover intuitive and actionable plans for more healthful eating and financial bandwidth. Each participating family fosters healthful living for many families - from one grain springs thousands.
Programs: Our comprehensive coaching programs for lower-income families cultivate self-respect as they impart actionable guidance towards healthier life styles. Participants self-discover personalized plans for enhanced physical and financial health. We believe that sustaining change requires repeated engagement within a comprehensive ecosystem covering food/health, financial vulnerability, and time/stress management. Our organization is embedded in the communities where we work through partnerships with community centers, schools, and health clinics. We have rapidly gained recognition and support in these communities owing to our novel and inclusive approach and collaborative spirit. We currently offer 4 distinct, yet interconnected programs:healthy lifestyle program (hlp)- our healthy lifestyle coaching was designed in collaboration with participants and community leaders to habituate more healthful behaviors. Hlps novel eight-week curriculum addresses food and health, responsible household finance, and time/stress management, all within a framework that is intuitive and accessible. Experiential learning is combined with weekly take-home projects, and every session ends with a group dinner at which participants share experiences and provide mutual reassurances. Invariably behaviors change, in ways that vary across families with their circumstancesthere is an exciting level of self-discovery that we celebrate with weekly rewards. Healthy lifestyle program for diabetes (hlpd)- building on the success of our hlp, we have introduced a more focused hlpd that is showing remarkable success with families facing the challenging circumstances of type-2 diabetes.
specialized workshops on food, health and household finances serve as entry points for families into our programs as they set out on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. They also provide continuing enrichment to past program participants and facilitate repeated with families in our communities.
comunidad marcado (comer) provides affordable first-quality farm-fresh produce and wholesome dried beans/grains that would not otherwise be accessible, absent shopping at higher-cost farmer's markets. Organized as a buying club, it reinforces healthy behaviors, promotes community ownership of its wellbeing, and is one of our means of repeated engagement with families. We are also helping farmers from whom we source by reducing food waste.
