I moved close to the park but didn’t investigate volunteering until I stumbled upon the Friends running a Colonial Days program for what seemed like hundreds of school children. I ended up volunteering as a gardener in one of the historic household gardens. Through that involvement I’ve come to see the Friends Fife and Drum Corps participating in civic events and historic re-enactments throughout the region. I’ve observed tens of thousands of people attending the annual Crossings, Independence Day celebrations with a full slate of educational programming, attended summer weekend events with historical interpreters at the Thompson-Neeley farmstead. I have learned to row a two ton Durham boat (I’m 71 btw) and have begun being a weekend garden ambassador greeting visitors to the garden where my involvement began. In that capacity I have literally met visitors to the park from coast to coast who appreciate the rich history which the Friends so passionately preserve and share.
With the 250th anniversary of Washington’s Crossing coming up in 2026, as well as America’s birthday celebration, the Friends are looking forward to programming events that will educate, entertain and inspire all generations. I feel so honored to be a part of it all.
I would be most cautious about donating any money to this charity as there are several dubious characters that monopolize the group and have a history of illegal activities. They do not list their board members on their webiste, do not have financial transparency, and they have misused grant money that was given to them for advertising. The President of this organization has no hesitation in lying or manipulating the books to show profit where there was none. This is a clannish "boys only" group that marginalizes other reenactment groups, women and volunteers.
I have been a long time supporter of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park, I've given the FWCP a substantial amount of my time and money. Over the past few years, I have noticed many changes. The group seems to have developed severely impaired relationships with outside organizations in the community, and sadly, amongst themselves.
March of 2013, I purchased three $125 tickets for a fundraiser. I have contacted the Business Manager on a number of occasions requesting a receipt for tax purposes. I was given no legitimate reason why she was unable to provide one to me.
