One Common Unity
January 7, 2011

I worked with One Common Unity several years ago and still treasure the experience. The use of the arts as a tool to empower the youth of DC to live above violence, is highly effective and rewarding to all involved. This organization is powered by those with a passion to make the world a better place.
Not only does OCU provide creative outlets for the kids involved, but also provides each one of them with an opportunity to make a contribution to a larger project- the chance to learn and grow. If art is the thing that makes us human, than OCU is humanizing DC one kid at a time!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As a volunteer I worked mostly behind the scenes of OCU's kids summer programs, but even from there I could see that the work OCU did was making a difference. I worked with a branch project that supported young women learning the djembe drum as a source of self expression and personal empowerment. Not only did the girls involved learn an instrument or perfect a craft, they created a community that gave them license to laugh, love and mature into women.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I were to make any changes to the organization as a whole, I would give them more money. As obvious as it may seem, the more resources the group has at it's disposal, the more opportunities they will be able to grasp. One Common Unity only needs to do more of what they've already mastered.

MY ROLE:
Volunteer & I helped organize the office, fundraisers and specific projects for various groups within the community.
