I fell in love with Center 4 the Arts of Homer a few years ago. My friends and co-workers say, You're going where...Homer??? What could be Homer? It's a small community that the interstate passes by.
What's in Homer is a terrific gem. It's a fabulous use of a former church sitting right on the town square. I live north of there and my home town put a similar size church to the wrecking ball. They put a video rental store in its place (that's worked out well for our community since everyone uses Netflicks now!) The people at Homer had a better idea. The Center has dance lessons, an art gallery, plays and concerts. There is something for everyone and they run the Center September through June so as not to compete with the areas' long established summer offerings.
My first concert Glengarry Bouys. Great acoustics ..you feel part of the music. The center offers Irish dance lessons and all over the sanctuary kids were dancing. (Not obnoxiously running around, but dancing.) These kids never sat down. We didn't either.
Get to the Center before the concert starts and save your seat by putting down a sticky note with your name on it. Then go to the church's former community room where you can have a glass of wine or a beer...maybe a piece of cake before the show. At intermission and often after the show, you can meet the musicians, buy a CD and sometimes get an autograph.
We saw Richie Havens there, twice. So intimate..he was singing just in front of us. We are seniors..as is Richie Havens now, but the audience had people of all ages. Everyone around us was enthralled. I swear I saw Richie Havens do a back flip after his last set!
Good music, good art and a place where we always are well entertained is for us priceless!
The Great!
