I have been a volunteer at Family Outreach for over 5 years. During my tenure, I have mentored a family, taught parenting classes, served as treasurer, and am currently liaison to the auxiliary board, the fund-raising arm of Family Outreach. A committed and dedicated organization, Family Outreach is instrumental in preventing child abuse through its programs of mentoring and parenting instruction. Although I now live in Denton County, this fabulous group of people will always remain near and dear to me.

MY ROLE:

I’ve been involved with Family Outreach in various roles for over four years – as a mentor, parenting class teacher, treasurer, board member, fund-raiser… Our mission is to help prevent child abuse. Every 10 seconds, a child is victimized by abuse or neglect; Collin County, TX, averages over 11 reports of child abuse per day. Family Outreach has an 88% success rate, which means that 88% of the families we serve will not have a confirmed case of abuse in the home within 4 years of receiving our services. This would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of all the volunteers of Family Outreach. I am very proud to be part of such a vital organization serving my community.

As a previous CASA volunteer, advocating for children who had been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect, I was very happy to find Family Outreach that PREVENTS child abuse from happening in the first place and breaks that dreaded cycle. Family Outreach is a close-knit, dedicated group of volunteers who mentor families, teach parenting classes, and provide financial assistance and referrals to at-risk families, thus ensuring that the children in our community grow up in a healthy and happy environment today to be caring and responsible parents tomorrow. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure--and I am proud to be part of Family Outreach with this goal in mind.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Family Outreach has an 88% success rate. This figure is calculated annually by reviewing our client families over a four-year period for re-referrals to Child Protective Services. Personal notes from client families and class members also confirm the successful results of Family Outreach.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase community awareness of the prevalence of child abuse to gain additional financial support and volunteers.
