The Wellness Community Valley Ventura, Inc.

My mother-in-law, from another culture and another country, suffered through invasive cancer and was, even the week before her death, insisting she was in the hospice "only for for a rest and would be going home in a couple of days." Insisting, that is, to everyone except my husband and I, who thanks to the wonderful openness and caring of Wellness Community Valley Ventura and its extensive programs over the year, promoted and publicized and talked about, had given us information that not only helped us move through the Silent Code but most importantly, establish for ourselves a healthy means of coping. What is the price tag for Valley Ventura's kind of sustained compassion? Priceless. And we bless its influence in the Community, especially since we never realized absorbing their information that we would need to use it ourselves to move through such a personalized Mother-in-Law journey.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the organization's brochures about the community and event and program information on local media. Also, my husband and I have volunteered several times to support events such as the Holiday Homes Tour.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase phone training for specific volunteers who may be caring but who might be afflicted with hearing problems, or lack of familiarity with organization protocol.

Continue programs, expanding into other cultures which may not value open communication as much as my husband and I do. Even in grief, there is such immense peace about knowing what we can, and can't do, to move through life's painful passages.

Ways to make it better...

It's important to keep the awareness campaigns constant, for today the need for the group's services might not to known but tomorrow, a need to contact may erupt.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Penetrating the "why should I care" attitude that sometimes humanly, and by nature, affect those busy with their lives, their jobs and trying to keep their ships upright.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This is a wonderful opportunity to applaud and reward the "good" in our society.
