Review for SUSTAINABLE SAN MATEO COUNTY , San Mateo, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Sustainable SM County has just developed a new data base of information to help people -- and businesses -- be sustainable in very practical ways. Using the Sustainability Hub, you find out very practical ways to make your garden more water efficient, to find a "green" auto mechanic, to find better transportation options besides driving your own car, and lots more. It's all about making the 3 E's of sustainability -- environment, economy, and equity -- practical to everyday people. And it grows from a history of more than 15 years of doing research on sustainability and recognizing people who do it. And it all started with 6 people who had an idea in the mid 1990s.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Great and dedicated people, both on staff and the volunteers.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Intelligent and interested in the local community.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help people meet energy conservation requirements (California AB32,eg). Grants or loans to low-income people for energy efficiency projects. Work on water conservation for individuals, parks, businesses. Partner w/ others on land use & transit issues.

Ways to make it better...

We had some more volunteers to help out with outreach and the annual event.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial challenge is very big right now. It is working to gain support from more individual donors, in addition to other sources. It also isn't as visible as the "basic needs" organizations right now.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Since the first Indicators Report in 1996, it has had a solid impact on local awareness about sustainability and on local policy. The research it does both on the Report and on the new Sustainability Hub make them both key resources for SM County.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Volunteer & I am on the committe for the annual awards event, and some other things now and then.
