My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Groundwork Hudson Valley, Yonkers, NY, USA
I joined the board in 2006 knowing a little about Groundwork Hudson Valley's commitment to invasive vine cutting, outdoor classrooms, and community gardens. I didn't realize how many programs GWHV actually tackles in a single year.
One of my favorite is the Our Folks program. Young people from Riverside High, trained in landscaping techniques and home repair by GroundworkHV staff, are matched with older people in their community who need help maintaining their homes. Both the young and older people benefit and form strong relationships. This winter in particular was important as the Our Folks team helped winterize old homes thereby keeping the residents comfortable and lowering their energy usage and expenses. How fabulous that a program like this strengthens both the environment and community bonds.
GWHV also facilitates dialogue among leaders in business and government with these communities so all feel vested in a healthier habitat for humans and other living things.
I could write more about Science Barge, River, Land , Job Training and educational programs but I will just encourage all to come visit us instead and learn more first hand.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My family has participated in many volunteer opportunities. Our favorite is invasive vine cutting. We have also worked with Americorp and Cottage Garden residents spring planting and painted & worked in the greenhouse on the science barge.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Wave a magic wand and find more money so we could add two more support staff members in the office. That would allow our already dedicated, overworked staff to stay out in the field where they are connecting with our constituents, rather than coming inside to answer phones and file reports.
