Hello Great Nonprofit Visitors!
Canvass for a Cause provides incredible opportunities for activists to work real-time on progressive issues. I came to CFAC in July of 2010 and was initially attracted to the idea of advocating for gay marriage full time in San Diego.. what I found within the first few days @ CFAC is that their model of campaigning, voter outreach, persuasion and fundraising is top notch and allows for anyone with any interest to pursue their own cause.
Grassroots advocacy isn't a cake walk - it's difficult. And for those looking for a means to make a lot of money, this isn't the job for you, BUT if your heart led you to greatnonprofits.org, and you're in San Diego, and you want to meet some badass people who actually work on progressive issues IN THE STREET and AT TOWN COUNCIL... CFAC is for you.
If you do your job you will talk to hundreds of voters about progressive issues and persuade many of them to the cause - either way you are collected valuable voter information that can be used the next time a progressive issue heads to the ballot box. Either way you are doing the under-celebrated grassroots work that changes policy.
Full Disclosure: I worked as a Field Director with CFAC and have sinced moved on to other opportunities in D.C. I am indebted to CFAC and its leadership for all their advice and training on canvassing and grassroots activism.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
my time as a volunteer, staff member, and friend of CFAC.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
include more clear incentives for canvassers who persuade the most people or collect the most data, also hold regular community potlucks open to activists from other organizing groups and social leaders
