Review for Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council, Charlotte, NC, USA
Through Girl Scouting, I have watched girls grow with the courage, character and confidence that Girl Scouting promotes. I have watched as a high school Girl Scout who had no friends was invited by her Girl Scout friend to sit at the "popular" table at lunch and was suddenly deemed socially accceptable by the other students at school. I have seen a girl without a mother receive the motherly care by other girls who took her shopping for undergarmets because her dad was uncomfortable with this task. I have seen girls who would not have gone to college, complete a four year degree because they saw the importance of supporting themselves through Girl Scouting. I have seen young girls feel strong as they have learned lifetime skills such as drilling a hole or hammering a nail. I have had parents thank me that their daughter had the skills to lead their families through times when the power had been out and the girl scout was the only one who could start a fire or prepare a meal on a campstove. I have seen friendships of sisters develop as they crawl into a bunk next to a fellow girl scout on a cold camping trip or share their food. I have seen girls learn acceptance of special citizens or of a family with economic hardships through service to their community. I have seen girls scared faces as they hang from a high ropes challenge course and later beam with pride that they completed it. I have seen young girls develop into the leaders of tomorrow. II have been lucky to be a Girl Scout leader.
