LENAWEE EMERGENCY AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING CORP
February 11, 2011
This agency is well known in our small community. We serve and help many people who are in a housing crisis. We have a very extensive social service network of professionals and landlords that step up to make sure all of our residents are safe and warm during these cold Michigan months. Just recently, a seventy one year old gentleman came off of a bus from Georgia, where he was living with his daughter. He had health problems and just wanted to come home to Michigan. It was blizzard-like weather when he arrived to our agency with only his two large duffel bags. Right away, we all pitched in to connect him to resources for shelter as well as supplied him with food , blankets, transportation tickets, and phone services from LEAHC. He is now permanently housed at a senior apartment complex which took case management and coordination.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
The data gathered on the surveys from clients is a clear indication that the population served was able to get beyond their immediate crisis and remain housed. This county has many foreclosures every month, and when I can help people remain in their home where they have lived and raised their family, this is what makes it all worth while.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Close the political "fluffy" programs that do not really help financially, but rather are lengthly, monthly telephone conversations inquiring about clients health, housing, jobs, family, etc. I know human confirmation is a wonderful thing, but without that financial piece it seems that outreach is a waste of time and case management.
Professional with expertise in this field & helped him with his application, requested funds from HUD.
