Education Through Music, Inc.

Ever since I was a teenager, I have insisted that I would be both a stellar violinist and a fantastic music teacher. In college, I double-majored in performance and music education to achieve that end. Never did I imagine that I would be teaching inner-city kids in the Bronx. Nor did I imagine that I would love it so much that I would pursue it full-time. Education Through Music makes a huge difference in the lives of low-income children by providing them with a quality music education, but it has also helped me to find my path as a music educator.

I first came across ETM in searching for part-time teaching work. I was new to NYC and wanted to find a steady teaching job that would allow me enough time to perform. Previous to working for ETM, I had taught primarily in suburban schools with established music programs. There was certainly an adjustment period going from suburban Ohio to the Bronx, but the mentors at Education Through Music provided me with valuable tools and feedback to make the transition easier. Throughout that transition, the most astonishing thing I found was what a difference the music program made! I had never fully appreciated what a quality music education did for children. Having grown up and taught in places where the music program was firmly established, I had taken it for granted. But teaching in a school where there had not been a music program for 20 years opened my eyes. I saw children make the most startling transformations in music class! They became better behaved, enthusiastic, and successful. The success they were achieving in music began to translate to other academic areas. They began to look forward to school. And I began to become addicted to teaching.

I am now in my 5th year of teaching for ETM. The students continue to surprise me in their enthusiasm and achievement. But I know that I would not be the teacher I am today without the ongoing support and mentoring that Education Through Music has provided. Thank you, ETM, not only for what you do for the kids but what you do for us teachers!

The results of Education Through Music are evident in the students the organization serves. i have seen life-altering changes in many of my students once they experienced a quality music education in their school. Problems with academic achievement and behavior diminish even with the most challenging of students. The sentiment I hear most often expressed from teachers and parents is, "That instrument has changed his life!"

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I had to make changes to ETM, I would hire a larger staff and give everyone a raise! It is laudable that so much of the funding goes directly to the children. However, I know the staff works very hard for very long hours while living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Everyone is so mission-driven that they are willing to work more hours for less pay to see the job done well. But I hope to see the day when ETM can afford to lavish upon the children AND the staff. They deserve it!

What is unique about this organization?

Education Through Music is not an enrichment program. It is a comprehensive, sequential music education program run by professional educators. Many other organizations in this field provide valuable musical experiences, but they are designed to be short-term enrichment programs rather than a comprehensive music education. These enrichment programs often target only a select group of students. ETM services every child in every school they serve from Kindergarten until graduation, providing them with a strong foundation in music and life skills.
