Review for Actors Theatre Of Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ, USA
My comments are based on experiences from both sides of the footlights. As an artist I have acted, directed and choreographed fights for Actors Theatre (AT). As a member of the audience I’ve enjoyed attending countless productions since 1986. AT is a vital cog in the cultural landscape of The Valley of the Sun. They inhabit a rare position here. They produce contemporary work that confronts and examines critical social, economic, spiritual and political issues, and they consistently produce at an exceptionally high level of artistry. Their seasonal palate challenges the audience and would normally be found in much more ‘sophisticated’ (an outsider’s prejudicial perspective) cities. AT takes an enormous risk each year and Phoenix is a much better place for that risk. Beyond that AT provides valuable internships for the MFA (Master of Fine Arts) candidates in the School of Theatre and Film at Arizona State University. As coordinator of that program, I cherish the close relationship ASU has with AT. Matthew Weiner’s interest in and support of our MFA program helps me to recruit top-tier talent from throughout the country. This is a perfect example of how AT nourishes the local community. I have always been and continue to be so very, very grateful for AT!
