SARATOGA P L A N INC
May 29, 2013

I first heard of Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land and Nature) while I was working at another nonprofit in Albany, so I knew it was doing good work. After I moved to Saratoga Springs I became a volunteer and a donor as well as a recipient of its services. I have been amazed by how much this organization accomplishes with minimal staff and a limited budget.

Saratoga PLAN is a land trust with numerous preserves and easements that are helping to protect the quality of life in rapidly growing Saratoga County. It also has built and maintains trails on many of those properties that enable and invite residents and visitors to get outside to enjoy nature. In addition, the organization has established a county-wide trails committee that engages people in planning for a future network of multi-use trails connecting communities and other destinations, including the Zim Smith Trail, which will be the backbone of this system. Most recently, it has been playing a key role in efforts to create a plan for a Greenbelt Trail system in Saratoga Springs connecting existing trails and looping around the city.

Parks & Trails New York, Inc.
December 15, 2011

Parks & Trails New York does much of its work in partnerships and collaborations. For example, it has pulled together an alliance of people and groups that are working to complete the Erie Canalway Trail along the famous canal between Buffalo and Albany. When finished, this multi-use trail will be a world-class bicycle tourism destination. Similarly, PTNY is part of a coalition advocating for construction of the Champlain Canalway Trail. And the organization provides technical and financial support to numerous local communtiies seeking to build their own trails to help residents be more active. But PTNY also plays a visible leadership role on important issues. A few years ago when a previous governor sought to close some state parks to reduce the budget, for instance, it rallied public opinion to keep that from happening.

The Great!

CHAMPLAIN AREA TRAILS INC
December 30, 2010

Champlain Area Trails has compiled an impressive record during the brief time it has been in existence. In about three years it has moved from an idea to an active organization with its first director that already has built new trails, developed a cadre of volunteers, attracted public support, led popular hikes, and positioned itself to pursue its mission vigorously in the years ahead.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

reviewing applications from it for technical assistance and small grants from my organization in which I have reviewed the group's successes. I also receive emails about projects and events.
