Review for Hamblin Personal And Community Development Institute, Battle Creek, MI, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am the founder and am one the current board members. It has been a joy to do the neighborhood focus groups and to identify supporters for the dream we have of reviving the first and only African-American USO built by soldiers returning during WWII. This was the first place where African-American veterans could gather socially in Battle Creek, MI., during the racially segregated 40's and later on through the 70's. The building later became a community center and was operated at some point by the City of Battle Creek as a youth center as well. The Hamblin Center was the only place in Battle Creek, MI where young African-American children could have after school activities. So for me, the possibility of bringing those opportunities back to neighborhoods that are struggling , is one of the best uses of my time.

Role:  Board Member & We provide opportunities for community memebrs to volunteer and in that process build community in several ways: strengthen relationships among residents who hadn't worked together and idnetify neighborhood needs. .
