THE SEAN O'SHEA FOUNDATION
March 19, 2014

I've been working as an advisor to the board and as an instructor for the Sean O'Shea Foundation for almost 6 years. What began as a seven week pilot yoga program in three schools in Oceanside, CA has grown to reach more than 9000 kids in low income, Title I schools all over San Diego County and a few schools in LA County as well. The program has grown to two 12- week sessions of yoga, nutrition and mindfulness teachings. The curriculum can be adapted for kids in grades 4-12. The emphasis is on learning that YOU are in charge of how you fuel and develop your body and mind through the choices you make regarding food, physical activity, and the way you interact with the world around you. This holistic approach to well-being is what makes the SOSF program unique. The tools kids learn - breathing techniques, yoga poses, centering and mindfulness practices, and basic nutritional facts - are essential life skills that will help them face challenges at school and in other areas of life.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would increase its reach and enable it to serve more schools each semester.

The Sean O'Shea Foundation is continuing to bring its FREE 7-week yoga and nutrition program to under-served schools. There is actually a waiting list now because so many schools have re-applied for this program and kids love it! In addition, SOSF is making an effort to reach the most challenging students - those in last-resort "court" mandated schools, special ed, homeless youth. This fall, SOSF began working with Rady's Childrens Hospital to bring yoga to children undergoing treatment for cancer and to their caregivers. All donations go directly to pay for these programs. This is an all-volunteer non-profit with the exception of the yoga teachers who receive payment for the classes they teach.

I have been teaching yoga to adults for ten years, and have witnessed yoga's power to change lives for the better - physically and mentally. The Sean O'Shea Foundation is doing a wonderful job of taking yoga into classrooms with a program geared to kids from 11-18. It makes yoga fun for them, teaches them sound nutritional principles, and increases their awareness of environmental challenges and how they can become "greener". Also of note is that the schools served by the foundation have significant numbers of Title I students, and not a single school has had to pay a penny for the 7-week program.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen positive behavioral changes in children over the 7-week span of the program, and have had many positive comments from teachers who subsequently worked with these kids.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would bring the Sean O'Shea Foundation program into more schools, and also develop a training program for school teachers who would like to incorporate yoga in to their classroom.

MY ROLE:
Professional with expertise in this field & I am a teacher for the foundation and have helped develop it's curriculum.
