I have been volunteering at the KCFP for 2 years. I am constantly amazed at what this organization has been able to accomplish. Every person there is volunteering their time and often resources to make everything work. The volunteers work many hours - and don't leave until every client that shows up has been served. The KCFP helps the community in numerous ways. First, and foremost, we give food to needy families and individuals. Then we start to weave into the community. We help the local schools with snacks for hungry children - and run a brown bag summer lunch program for these same kids, we help the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts (and to be honest - they help us quite a bit as well -- it's a WIN:WIN), we work with the Senior Services in Yorkville, we reach out and help pet owners keep and maintain their four legged family members, we help with the PADS program that reaches out to help the homeless in our area during the colder months, and we help a variety of other groups to help others. I don't even know ALL the ways we help - nor ALL the people we help. I only know that I feel blessed and honored to be part of the KCFP family.

The Kendall County Food Pantry is a wonderful place. It helps all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. Not only is it helpful to the people you would expect it to be good for - the people in the community that need food (and clothing). It is also helpful to the volunteers like me. I feel like I have a purpose and usefulness when I am volunteering at the KCFP. I feel like I am able to play a small part in making someone's day a little brighter or more bearable. The KCFP is also good for the students in our community. Mrs. Spaeth allows youth to do their community service with us. I have worked with many of these kids. And some of them seem to really make a change in their lives for the better. Now THAT is a positive impact on society.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I have met many wonderful people at the KCFP -- many of whom I am proud to count among my friends... The positive attitude of many of these retired volunteers is amazing and inspiring to me. I hope to be as good of an influence on others when I am their age. And I hope to be as useful and active as they still are.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

I love volunteering at the food pantry. I miss it when I am unable to go and help out.

I enjoy volunteering at the food pantry. I was welcomed in and treated like "one of the gang" from the very beginning. The whole program is comprised of many caring individuals with the single purpose of helping others. At the end of my shift I return to my warm home and a hot meal with my family with a little more appreciation for all the 'little things'.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my own appreciation for what I have -- that many of us take for granted. The people we are helping, who are so genuinely grateful, are a constant amazement to me.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not be able to say at this point. I haven't been a part of it for long enough to criticize anything/one. I also haven't had any experience with other groups like this one to know how it compares. I only know that the director treats everyone with equal respect and care. And that is a rare quality.

MY ROLE:
Volunteer & I usually count, sort, and organize the food that comes in.
