Review for Canvass For A Cause, San Diego, CA, USA
I would say that overall working for Canvass for a cause was a positive experience. I had a good time. I was excited I got to be outside for numerous hours a day in the sun. My tan lines were epic when I was working for them. They have really good people working for them collectively. They were my family while I was out there. But at the end of the day it jsut wasnt for me and thats ok. Pluses: Great work environment. I had a good time every single day I was working. Diverse work place no one looked a like and I felt it was an accurate representation of the LGBTQ community as a whole. Minuses: I think there is a very one dimensional amount of knowledge that is being offered during training. A lot of people working for CFAC did not have basic knowledge of other issues affecting LGBTQ folks outside of D.A.D.T, Prop 8 ... and occasionally Prop 19... Also as someone who got really close with a lot of my co-workers and was a venting mechanism for some. I think that some management was not necessarily open to hearing what their employees had to say about some things. I would challenge them to listen to the ideas their employees are comming to them with because some of them are pretty epic and they are out there every day so they might have a better handle on what might be affective because they are out there all the time.... also I would challenge some folks in the organization to do some self education around racism within the LGBT community. There were a lot of comments made that made it hard to as a person of color working there because it was really awkward sometimes when someone would make those types of remarks. but on the whole it was a positive experience I wouldnt change it for the world. They allowed me to let my creative juices in the arena of social justice. Their training sessions they did every morning where awesome. However it was a little contradictory because in the regard for time they never made people do their response structure three times. But they on a consistent basis during trainings every morning told us that on average we would have to go through the response structure that many times... that could be splitting hairs but. Over all I loved it!!! I had a good time!!! Awesome organization.
