Canvass for a Cause
August 18, 2010
When my youngest sister was killed by a hit and run driver a few years ago, it was very sad for me. We had been close when we were younger and we shared a love of independence, politics and progressive causes. My sister was also much loved in her community, having worked long and hard to represent working class folks in her town and at a statewide level. It wasn't legal for her to marry her same sex partner of many years in that state though, and when she died her partner had a hard time making arrangements and keeping the life and things they owned together. When the Canvass for a Cause organization was looking for specific accounting help then, I volunteered because, as a CPA, I knew I could help and hopefully make some small contribution to changing things so that other loved ones don't go through what my sister's partner had to face.
