Review for Bremerton High School Pay It Forward Scholarship, Silverdale, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

BHS PIF Scholarship is a unique scholarship program serving an underrepresented segment of an inner city high school in Bremerton, WA. We currently give 2- $14,000 scholarships per year to students who: are among the first in their family to attend college, have between a 2.5 and 3.5 GPA, are low income and are willing to Pay It Forward, as in the book or movie, by doing community service at least three times while receiving scholarship money. We have a Mentor Program which helps our recipients, new to the college scene, to make the most of their college opportunities. We help them throughout their four years by providing advice, a professional mentor matched to their major, and networking help. We want to insure our recipients GRADUATE from college and not simply attend for one or two years.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with local people who see the great need in the community of this scholarship and working with them to make it happen for these terrific BHS grads.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

hard working, understanding volunteers who "get it"-- that motivated students in the 2.5 - 3.5 GPA range still deserve the opportunity to attend college and better their lives and those of their family members. We end poverty through higher education!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Establish an endowment where 5 scholarships of $20,000 each could be given every year. This is our dream and goal of the future!

Ways to make it better...

all of us founders of the scholarship had worked in the non profit sector previously! But we are mostly a group of teachers who saw a need--to help low income kids go to college--and who have the passion to make this organization work!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting more students to realize they have a good chance to win this scholarship. They need to be motivated Bremerton High School grads with generous hearts--to Pay It Forward by doing community service while receiving scholarship funds.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This is a scholarship for "every kid"--to help students realize their dreams through higher education, no matter what their family circumstances are. Knowledge is indeed power, and a college education can make dreams come true.
