Review for Share Self-Help for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancers, Inc., New York, NY, USA
I learned about SHARE during my hospital stay for a modified mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in 1997. SHARE was truly an anchor for me during the years immediately following my breast cancer diagnosis. It was so important and meaningful to be surrounded by other women who were "in the same boat", physically and emotionally. I actually participated in THREE groups, and all of my group leaders were outstanding. Through SHARE I learned about the "sentinel node dissection" procedure, a method of tracking cancer cell migration without removing a cluster of underarm lymph nodes. Also I learned of physicians in the NYC area who pioneered this procedure. I attended lectures about the newest techniques in breast conservation and reconstructive surgery. I borrowed materials from SHARE's library of books, videotapes and articles. Eventually I volunteered for SHARE, helping with office work and with SHARE-A-WALK. I secured a screening location for the film "Out of Africa", which SHARE aired for a fundraising function a few years a go. I continue to donate to SHARE, and I have a good friend who I met in one of my support groups. It's wonderful to know that SHARE is there for me if I should need its direct support in the future.
