Medical Students for Choice
June 12, 2010
Medical Students for Choice is, to me, a model non-profit organization. It serves 10,000 medical students in the U.S. and Canada and medical students (the population it serves) run the Board of Directors and guide the strategic goals for the organization. The Executive Director, Lois Backus, is brilliant and talented yet always doggedly focused on the mission, core values and grassroots approach of the organization. The Board is committed, diverse and multilateral in its approach. The organization has made a huge difference in the lives and education of thousands of medical students and recent data suggests that it has increased the number of physicians providing essential reproductive health services to women.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I was a medical student in California and MSFC played an important role in my education, reminding me that there was a large group of physicians who were advocating for the rights and health of vulnerable women.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the profound dedication of the Board and staff and the awareness that we are making an important difference in medical education and ultimately the health of women.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
immensely capable and dedicated.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
expand globally and tackle unsafe abortion and maternal mortality worldwide.
When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
Board Member & I served as chair of the Board for one year, and board member for two years.
