Once upon a time there was a young man who had cerebral palsy, was intelligent and wanted to contribute to society in a unique way. He was a special person who knew the challenges of life and yet knew he could make a difference to others with disabilities like himself. And he founded the group called United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware County. Today we call our program CADES which stands for Children and Adult Disability Educational Services. My sister attended CADES for nearly 30 years before her death in 2000. Our family knew CADES made such a difference to Rita, giving her stimulation and education and socialization, giving her the therapy sessions she needed, and giving her the ability to enjoy life each day with competent, compassionate and caring educators and staff. Our program has grown from a small group of clients and volunteer parents to a multi-level program from infants to adults some with multiple disabilities and some also medically fragile. Each day is a gift to the clients and to many parents it is a blessing that CADES exists. Over the years the staff have become family and many have over 3o years of service because they truly love their jobs. That in itself speaks volumes. And the children and adults are grateful for the loving atmosphere that greets them each day they arrive at CADES.
