My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Open Arms Housing, Inc, Washington, DC, USA
When Open Arms first opened its doors, it was a revelation! The serenity and cleanliness of the facilities, as well as the warmth and caring of the staff, provide a safe environment that, on its modest scale, can enable women to break the cycle of homelessness and re-establish a level of normalcy in a highly structured and nurturing setting. Although this is a small non-profit that husbands its resources to stretch the benefits to the residents, it is important to note that the Open Arms model of small-scale, structured assistance to women who need help to reclaim their dignity and self-sufficiency, differs from other non-profits that cater mostly to men and on a larger scale. Its facilities are unusually inviting because of the attention to detail that went into the renovation, and the experienced staff helps the women who live here to find order and purpose, both of which aren't possible either on the streets or in most shelters. This can truly be a model to aid chronically at-risk and homeless women to feel that they are part of a community that recognizes their individual humanity and worth.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Seeing a model to combat homelessness that respects the individual dignity of its residents and provides a secure, well-structured and inviting setting to establish community for women who need all of those elements to re-order their lives.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Professionals with experience in dealing with disadvantaged individuals. I was struck by their exceptional warmth and enthusiasm to make a success of Open Arms for the women who live there and for the surrounding community.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Diminish homelessness for women in Washington, DC, and establish a network of attractive, well=structured small residences to help many more women find their own dignity and human worth.
Ways to make it better...
It had been more extended.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Secure funding to maintain and grow the program.
One thing I'd also say is that...
This non-profit, with its size, scale, and attention to detail and structure, occupies a unique niche in the helping communities of DC. It is indeed a model for success in combating homelessness and .
