TAKING THE REINS
April 6, 2010
In the past ten years, as I've become increasingly involved in Taking the Reins, going from taking a friend's daughter to her riding lessons, to volunteering, and now serving on the board, I have had the twin pleasures of watching this unique program for girls grow, and watching the girls themselves grow from shy, tentative middle school girls to young women who have learned that the futures ahead of them are theirs to plan and control. Starting with a program rooted in horseback riding, and expanding to include creative writing, photography, and organic gardening, Taking the Reins can truly be said to cultivate lives.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Seeing girls with few aspirations realize they can do things like go graduate from high school, get a job or go off to college - and then do it!
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Incredibly dedicated and generous of time and spirit.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Buy the fabulous 100-year old barn and property that's home to the program and a magical urban oasis to the girls, staff and all who visit, to ensure that Taking the Reins can provide a superb, life-empowering program for girls for many years to come.
How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
About every week
