OASIS ANIMAL SHELTER
February 14, 2010

Oasis, an all dog shelter, is a difficult place to work at. One person calls all the shots and is not easy to get along with. Efforts to help the dogs get adopted go nowhere since the power is all in one person's hands. The city is aware of what goes on with this shelter and act like they cannot do anything, but really, just don't want to. Many wonderful dogs stay there for years and years which is shameful. Many good, would-be adopters are treated like garbage and turned down for stupid reasons. Needless to say, not too many volunteers stay there for long.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

maybe the past year, get a tad better. Several long-timed dogs there found homes. The manager is allowing 2 long-timed volunteers to do more, like with advertising. Still, you shouldn't have to work there for 3 or more years before being allowed to do more.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

ADVERTISE IT! Do more events, let people in this town KNOW there is a dog shelter close by, get community involvement with it, fix up the shelter instead of having parts of it look dumpy, and not be a one man show about it all but get assistance!

More feedback

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the dogs. Period. Plus I made a few good friends.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

All the volunteers, the morning kennel cleaners, were very nice women. The board of directors is a joke.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do nothing with it. It would hoard it and not use it to fix up the place. They have a very high budget there but you wouldn't know it.

Ways to make it better...

we all could have done more, like show the dogs during the day, take phone calls, participate in PetFinder postings, advertise without having to get permission like a bunch of school kids. And not treated so bad.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the fact that just one person is in FULL CHARGE. It's all about her. No one can assist in the adoptions so less dogs get adopted. That is a travesty. If more were adopted in a timely manner, more could be saved from the pound and go there.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I really miss the dogs there.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
