The Wild Animal Sanctuary
October 4, 2013

I volunteer at a wonderful small sanctuary in Texas, but since my son lives in Denver, I decided to visit this bigger sanctuary to see how they were run. Well, I was then and continue to be very impressed! Their staff is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable and the animals all look so well cared for! Their enclosures take into account the needs of each type of animal according to how they would live in the wild., and their enclosures are huge! Plenty of room to run, play, hide - whatever they want at the moment. They have a state of the art medical facility on site and make up individual diets for each type of animal. Older or sick animals have enclosures that are smaller and closer to the staff so they can get specialized treatment. The animals very obviously come first and the commitment of staff and volunteers alike is something to experience. I will go back and visit every time I am visiting my son and I truly look forward to all of my upcoming visits!

I have been a volunteer at In-Sync Exotics for nine years and I really cannot imagine nor remember what my life was like before I started working with these magnificent animals. The cats at In-Sync are actually family to all of us who are lucky enough to be near them. We cry when we see them come to us at first sick, frightened, undernourished, covered in open sores, and then the joy begins as we watch them blossom into the magnificent animals they were meant to be. The love that is showered over them by staff and volunteers makes the magic happen. It takes a lot of cleaning, positive vibes, great food, correct medication and great vet care to achieve these successes - none of which comes cheaply. I know for a fact that every penny goes directly to the care of these exotics! I am so proud to be a member of such an outstanding sanctuary - the cats' comfort and well-being comes before all else, and that is as it should be!

I started volunteering at In-Sync about 8 years ago. I certainly would not still be there if I did not think this was a worthwhile organization! I am constantly amazed at the level of dedication of our volunteers to these beautiful cats who come to us in such need. I have seen tears flow when we see the condition some of these animals arrive in and then the hours of work put into each and every one of them to help them reach their prime. Lions who could not walk end up chasing balls all over their big playgrounds. Tigers who crouch in fear at every new noise when they arrive, come over to their fences to be loved on and to chuff at their favorite keeper. Watching them investigate their swimming pools for the first time is a joyous occasion! Medical needs are met immediately and people are always coming up with new knds of enrichment to keep them stimulated, happy, playful and thinking! It is a place of healing and happiness!

I have been volunteering at In-Sync for about 7 years. Even though we rely almost soley on volunteer help, there is a great consistency for our beloved cats. We have programs in place where each cat has a "Cat Companion" who goes and talks to "their" cat as often as possible and the cats, in turn, respond to our voices! It is so rewarding to see a large exotic cat come right over to the fence when they hear certain voices. We also are known for rescuing and caring for older and sick cats who no one else will help. We rescued Sabu ( I LOVE him!) last summer from a now closed sanctuary. He was unable to walk without falling over, was 21 years old, did not have mane due to neutering and had no bladder control. We were happy to take him! He now can walk and also run a little, plays with his beloved ball and adores being scratched by our volunteers through the fencng. He has a heart as big as the great outdoors and I am so glad we rescued him!! His is one of many stories you will find at our sanctuary.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary
August 8, 2011

I have visited the Wild Animal Sanctuary quite a few times over the last 4 years and have been very impressed with the facility. I actually am a very active volunteer at a sanctuary in Texas, so I kind of know what I'm looking at. The animals all seem to have the kind of environment they would enjoy in the wild - at least as close as is possible: the tigers have access to water for swimming or at least soaking; lions live in prides and have dens located on many acres; bears have access to ponds and dens also on large acreage; wolves live in natural packs on acreage.

One very impressive thing they have accomplished is the joining of separate tigers into larger groups living in very large enclosures. This is quite unusual and shows a deep knowledge of how exotic cats think, act and their needs.

They have invested a huge amount of money into a state of the art veterinarian center that greatly enhances the care of the animals under their watch. They seem to always put the care of their animals above all else and it is always a joy to visit there.

My son is a volunteer there so I know from the inside out all about their safety precautions and I am very impressed with how that facility is run.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

tours I have taken and talking to my son almost weekly about his days out there.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make the animals more accessible for the public to view. However, I understand the reason for the inaccessibility - these lucky animals have acres after acres to roam so it would be very difficult to do this.

MY ROLE:
General Member of the Public & I have visited there many times and donated to them.

I have visited two separate times and stayed for a week each time - staying in the cabins near the Horse Headquarters. Went with family members and had the best experiences ever! Walking dogs, grooming and feeding horses, taking dogs for overnights, cleaning enclosures, sitting with nervous dogs trying to help acclimate them to human beings, playing with cats and cleaning kitty enclosures - the list of opportunities to help just goes on and on - each one better than the last! The staff are absolutely incredible! they know each animal by name, all of their quirks, what their individual needs are. I am an animal rescuer myself ( exotic cats from the entertainment industry ) and know how hard these people work. Everyone should give them 5 stars!

In-Sync Exotics, Inc.
July 15, 2011

I have been a volunteer at In-Sync for almost 8 years and have seen tremendous growth - both in the size of the facility and the number of rescued animals, but also in the programs we have instituted for the further health and well being of our cats. We have had a trainer come from another major facility to help us train our cats to receive basic medical treaments without needing to anesthetize them, which can be dangerous for the animals and certainly not pleasant. We have an enrichment program where each cat has a volunteer who gives them extra attention at least once a week with things that help stimulate their minds. We also have a Cat Companion program where each cat has a volunteer who just sits outside their enclosure and talks to them for extended periods - getting them comfortable with the human voice and feeling safe and secure in their environment. Of course, every enclosure is cleaned every single day and water tubs are cleaned and water drinking barrels also. We have taken in very elderly cats with serious medical issues - ones no one else would want - and allowed them to live out their lives in peace, dignity and without fear. To see their eyes change from frightened and withdrawn to bright, alert and curious about their surroundings is worth every single minute and dollar involved to get them there.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching health and vigor return to animals we have rescued. I have also enjoyed watching children learn about the problems involved with exotic animals in circuses and any of the entertainment industries. Seeing them respond to animals they can see so clearly and up so close and knowing that this has made an impact on how they will view wild animals in the future - this has been a very mportant part of my experience with In-Sync.

Find a way for us to not have to worry about finances! This is a very expensive undertaking ( if done properly ) and we could help even more animals if money were not such an issue.

MY ROLE:
Volunteer & I give tours, help with interviews with new applicants for volunteer work, help clean enclosures, enrichment team and cat companion team. I also just do anything that needs doing!.

In-Sync Exotics, Inc.

In-Sync does actually do everything that it's Mission Statement says. Every penny raised goes to the big cats ( tigers, lions, serval, cougars, bobcats, lynxes). The sanctuary is run almost totally by volunters with only 1 full time paid position - the head zoo keeper. The animals are always treated with dignity and receive the best vet care available. They are given enrichment daily to help keep their minds active and they receive individualy prepared meals - just to their liking! Some prefer their meat in chunks, some prefer it ground up and that is how they get it daily! Each cat is talked to and individually inspected daily for any signs of injuries or illness. The tigers all have access to pools while the other cats have climbing apparatus in their playgrounds or whatever best fits their needs. It is an awesome place where, as I said, each and every pnny goes directly to the care of the exotic cats.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the vast improvement each cat has made after his/her rescue and placement in In-Sync.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated and very hard working. They were also exceptionally well-trained since safety is a major issue when dealing with large, exotic cats

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build an on-site veterinarian facility, which it sorely needs, and build more enclosures and play areas so many more cats could be rescued. It could also educate many more people about the plight of exotic cats and all other exotic animals in our society.

Ways to make it better...

It could not have been better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

raising money to build new enclosures for the many more cats who need rescuing in Texas.

One thing I'd also say is that...

visiting there is a life changing event. One realizes the many stupid things we have done in our lives and supported in our lives that have led directly to the abuse and horrible mistreatment of these magnificent animals.
