Eyes on Africa
November 18, 2009

Eyes on Africa is a non-denominational non-profit organization whose mission is "to provide eyeglasses to Africans with no access to vision care". Imagine hitting middle age with close vision failing, and being unable to read fine print or see well enough to do your beading, weaving, carving etc. The inexpensive reading glasses provide deserving Africans with the ability to continue their reading and handicrafts into old age. Eyes on Africa has distributed over ten thousand pairs of glasses to more than a dozen countries. It's a simple concept, and one we can easily take for granted.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Uganda, East Africa. We distributed reading glasses to various villages, including the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Gulu, Northern Uganda

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand the volunteer base.

More feedback

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The joy of seeing someone be able to read fine print or see fine details for the first time in years.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Open, hard-working, dedicated, and committed to the mission.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Distribute eyeglasses to ten million people throughout Africa. The best part of Eyes on Africa is that the implementation of the mission is simple: Buy new reading glasses and mail or deliver them to the various contacts in 6 different African countries.

Ways to make it better...

more people came to Africa with us from the US.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

finding continuous sources of funding to expand eyeglass distributions. This would include corporate gifting and foundation grants as well as individual contributions

One thing I'd also say is that...

Eyes on Africa is all volunteer. All members are adamant about all donations going to the purchase and delivery of glasses to deserving Africans.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
