My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Somaly Mam Foundation, New York, NY, USA
I have worked in gender and development for over 20 years with over 10 years in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. I have had several occasions to engage with Somaly Mam Foundation and AFESIP in the region on policy discussions as well as interagency projects. I personally know a long list of past staff, volunteers and donors. Given my current level of understanding around the real impact of these programs, I would not personally donate funds or time to Somaly Mam Foundation.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Use evidence-based practices that maximize long-term benefit to clients. Current shelter model is understood by most in the field to lead to institutionalization of clients thus disempowering rather than empowering them. Increase collaboration with other service providers in Cambodia rather than duplicate efforts. There is significant wasting of resources due to duplication. Reduce the number of short-term volunteers and visitors to care facilities.
