DAVID AND LUCILE PACKARD FOUNDATION
January 30, 2013

An amazing foundation, a trailblazer in Silicon Valley philanthrophy with huge impact. They've saved huge amounts of California's natural beauty and ecologically sensitive lands from development. They've saved condors and other endangered animals. And they support many worthy community groups. Not sure how they got snookered into funding Working Partnerships though. An inefficient, non-transparent and nakedly political candidate machine that should not qualify for foundation support. Given the amazing amount of good work Packard does, it's understandable how WPUSA fell through the cracks, but hopefully they'll read the recent press coverage and reconsider their bankrolling of WPUSA.

SAN JOSE PARKS FOUNDATION
January 30, 2013

This young group is off to a good start and has been out raising funds to support San Jose's parks, trails and community centers. These amenities have been impacted by city budget cutbacks, and it's good to see a group focusing on maintaining a vital parks and recreation center. The volunteer board interacts with PRNS staff and advocates for parks. Led by an experienced nonprofit director with populist passion, I have high hopes for SJPF.

San Jose Jazz
January 30, 2013

San Jose Jazz puts on one of the nation's top jazz festivals and recently added a winter series. They also engage in youth education. It's been going since the 1980s, when it was started by Sammy Cohen and Henry Schiro. Though both are sadly gone from this earth, a new generation of leadership has taken over and kept the festival evolving, embracing funk and blues, with acts like George Clinton, Los Lobos and Amanda Shaw while continuing to attract top flight classic jazz musicians. One of San Jose's top cultural events.

SPUR
January 30, 2013

SPUR recently opened an office in San Jose and set its sights on bringing smart urban development to Silicon Valley. They chose a smart, well traveled, well liked, locally-bred and forward-thinking executive to lead the effort. So far they have been meeting with local people to gather information and have been holding educational events. I have high hopes that SPUR will have a constructive impact on San Jose.

SAN JOSE DOWNTOWN FOUNDATION
January 30, 2013

This foundation runs a really great program that allows student artists to decorate doorways throughout the downtown area. The program enlivens the streetscape and celebrates youthful creativity. A double win. Nine years going, it has attracted the support of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Check out some of the really beautiful art: http://sjdowntown.com/Downtown_Doors/

San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles
January 30, 2013

Under former executive director Jane Przybysz, this museum was passionate and eclectic. The new E.D., Christine Jeffers, seems more about money than art, and it SJMQT has lost a bit of its soul. The passionate volunteers keep the place running, but it seems like there's never anyone in there. This would be a good destination museum in a suburban location, but a big downtown facility for quilt enthusiasts seems a waste of a key location, where a big draw, truly urban arts group could make a home. Just doesn't seem urban enough for where San Jose is going. Occasionally, an interesting and edgy exhibit works its way into the stitchery.

WORKING PARTNERSHIPS USA
January 5, 2013

WPUSA shares offices, exec team, staff, volunteers, copying machines, office supplies and telephones with a politically active AFL-CIO labor council. It pays large salaries to a former councilwoman and mayoral candidate, the head of the local Democratic party and the chief political strategist of what local newspapers describe as a political machine. Campaigns are actively run and candidates are endorsed in the same offices. Two closely aligned office holders — one a convicted councilman and the other a sitting county supervisor — have had well publicized corruption issues. Hard to see how it can honestly answer "No" to question 3 of part IV on the 2010 Form 990 "Dld the organlzatlon engage In dlrect or lndlrect campalgn actlvltles on behalfofor In opposltlon to candldates for publlc offlce?" Also note tax investigation in notes on Form 990 and late filing of 2011 forms.
