I have been a volunteer tutor with 826 Boston for over two years. It has been a remarkable experience. Founded by Dave Eggers of a Heartbreak Work of Staggering Genius fame founded the organization in Valencia, California as a way to encourage and inspire kids of all ages to be writers. The organization has sites now in 8 major cities including in Roxbury, MA in the Bigfoot Research Institute. As a volunteer, I've been involved in helping with publishing kids books, helping them with their homework, volunteering to organize special events and fundraising. The great thing about this organization is that you can be involved in many aspects of making it successful- depending on your interests. It really is a magical place, filled with inspiring young writers, energetic volunteers and an unbelievably dedicated staff. If you are looking for a place that really makes a difference in the lives of kids and makes it easy to volunteer- I would definitely encourage you to check out 826 Boston in Roxbury- you won't believe a place like this can exist until you actually experience it for yourself. This place makes possibility a magical reality.
