PROYECTO ITZAES
April 24, 2013

Proyecto Itzaes (PI) does much needed work in the villages of Yucatan peninsula by providing books and other resources as well as educational programs to the children of the villages. I visited Chicxulub Pueblo, Ixil and Too during my months of volunteering and was impressed by the enthusiasm of children to learn, and by the energy of the adolescents and young adults who themselves used to be "children of PI" and now are volunteering themselves by teaching and organizing workshops. It would be wonderful to see PI continue its work far into future and to see its programs expanding, thus there is a continuing need for resources (funds, supplies). Cindy, the founder of PI, is an amazing person who I see spending countless hours on PI. I would love to continue volunteering for PI in the future when I return to Chicxulub.

I have known about Proyecto Itzaes (PI) since 2005 when I moved to US. Ever since then I have wanted to come to Yucatan to visit its sites and to volunteer for PI. And now I had the chance. PI is an amazing organization that provides the Maya children and families with chances for education and with tools to achieve their goals, and realize their dreams, dreams of things that we often take for granted. It has been great to see PI sites at Chicxulub Pueblo, Ixil and Too, the sites I have so far been to. The enthusiasm of children to learn to read (with the help of books and other educative tools at PI sites), to have their first yoga class, to learn about sustainable agriculture ("cultivo classes"), and, most recently their preparation for the first Farmer's Market of the villages, has been inspiring. I will definitely continue volunteering for PI in the future.
