My son, Tyler, attended Children's Outreach Project from 2005 through 2008. On the surface, he seemed like your typical little boy - fairly smart and sociable, and full of energy - but it quickly became obvious that he needed a little extra push. Ms. Alyssa was his first teacher in the Toddler room. My wife still has a cute Mother's Day project he made in that class, with his picture in the middle of a paper plate with a sentimental poem and lowers and ribbon around the edge. He progressed through the grade levels and by the time he reach Ms. Keitha's preschool class he was starting to exhibit some behavioral issues. His acting up in class, not listening to his teachers and getting violent with other students got progressively worse. It got to the point where the Program Director at the time, Ms. Penny said either I get him some help or he would no longer be welcome in the school. They put us in touch with Community Reach, where, through an early childhood grant, he received therapy, got a diagnosis of ADHD and Sensory Input Disorder and was prescribed medication. The counseling was free and the medication was very inexpensive, and the difference was immeasurable. Between the assistance from Community Reach, the dedicated work of the school's Occupational Therapist at the time, Ms. Lynn, and amazing patience from his teachers, Tyler successfully completed his time at Children's Outreach Project and was fully prepared for first grade in the public school system. By the time he finished Kindergarten in Ms. Barb and Ms. Ashley's class, he was reading books on his own and writing words by sounding them out on his own. Today, Tyler is in fifth grade and still doing very well. He's reading at an eighth grade level and doing better in math than I ever did. We're still monitoring and adjusting his medications, and he isn't always focused on his work as he should be, but I believe the start he got at C.O.P. made a world of difference and got him where he is today.
