I have been a School Counselor in the Rochester City School District for 18 years. When our school changed from a middle school to a high school, I became aware of the Rochester Children's Scholarship Fund. It was created to motivate and reward high achieving students for their good grades. Since most of our student population lives in poverty, one of the purposes of the fund was to eliminate or diminish students' need to work and therefore enable them to have more time to devote to their studies. I have witnessed first-hand the fund's ability to motivate students to higher grades. This has resulted in more acceptances by more selective colleges for these young people. The Fund has succeeded in promoting academic excellence in our district!
