STICKNEY TOY BREED RESCUE
October 30, 2013

I have been following Mary Stickney's Rescue for many, many years now. One of the things I love about her and her organization is how transparent it is. She shares all manner of information with her supporters and will always answer emailed questions as well as questions on her facebook page. I feel that her page on facebook gives anyone an opportunity to look right in to her home and see how well she treats all the dogs she takes in. She also has many supporters who actually come to her home and volunteer caring for and grooming the dogs.

She does often have high vet bills as the many dogs she takes in are mill dogs (and abandoned dogs) who have received little or no medical care their entire lives. Mary doesn't skimp on a dog's vet care needs even when they come to her in the worst possible condition which happens often. I have never heard her "brag" about such bills as they are often a source of anxiety if anything since her vet is good but he does not work for free and she incurs many other expenses caring for these dogs such as food, heartworm and flea meds, grooming supplies, etc. She will let us know when she could use donations to help pay the bill down as the rescue/re-homing donation of $250 to adopt one of her dogs often does not reimburse her for the $600 to $1000 the vet may have charged to spay, do a dental, repair a hernia, or treat severe eye damage or fix broken legs!! But as these are mill dogs and not championship dogs, requesting more dollars from an adopter for the re-homing fee will only keep these dogs from going to their forever homes.

I am in awe of the constant daily hard work that Mary does for these dogs and the commitment she has made to them. She is the best, deserves a five star rating and definitely has earned those five stars through her continued hard work giving these dogs a second chance at life and their first chance at loving homes!! (P.S. If I lived anywhere close to this rescue I would be volunteering my time regularly but as it is I am too far away so I support Mary in as many other ways as I can.)

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Love for this rescue to have a grant that would help to pay the many expenses that come up with all the needs rehabbing dogs generates.

Bat World Sanctuary
April 20, 2012

I had the good fortune of coming to know Bat World and Amanda Lollar through my own volunteer work with Ann Young, who was a wild bird rehabilitator in Central Florida a good many years ago. Ann would occasionally receive a bat from people who were at a loss to know where to turn for helping these little creatures. I remember the first night Ann introduced me to my first bat, telling me to hang around once we were done cleaning cages, & feeding & putting hundreds of baby birds to bed. She said she had a little treat for me to see. I assumed it was some sort of rare & special bird. But Ann brought out a little tiny bat that she had done her best to doctor after receiving it and then each morning and night would feed it mealworms. I was enthralled watching the little bat hold the mealworm between its little "feet" and munch on mealworm after mealworm till it had its fill. Its little face looked like a tiny dog's face though I don't know what type of bat it was, I will never forget that night. I also remember Ann's delight when she found out about Bat World and was able to send these little charges she received over the years to experienced bat rehabbers where they would be safe and live with others of their own kind. I remember her showing me their first newsletters with the wonderful stories of rescued bats and educational information on how to help the bats. She was a big supporter of Bat World and encouraged all of her volunteers to become members and support them. Thanks to Ann, I (and most of her other volunteers) have supported them for many years. Nowadays, I often wear my Bat World Tee shirt to social events and take the frequent opportunity to answer questions about the little bat on the shirt or questions as to what and where Bat World is and how it is run by unpaid full time volunteers. I also encourage them to go to the Bat World website or the facebook page where they can learn even more about this organization and the amazing creatures they help. I know they will fall in love with Bat World and with its inhabitants! Bat World is incredible and deserves the support of all!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

When I worked with a local wild bird rehabber who was able to save wild bats that had been brought to her by concerned citizens by turning to Bat World for information to assist the rescued bat and then by sending them to Bat World once they were stabilized. By sending the bat to Bat World, it could be given the best option for a continued good life. Without Bat World the lives of those little bats would most likely not have been saved.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I honestly don't believe there is any suggestion I can offer that would make this a better organization. It is run by intelligent & passionate people with tremendous hearts which I believe is the best of what humans can offer any endeavor.

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?

Last year it was the need for a new incubator during baby season as their old incubator has died, the priority being to make sure the bat babies had what they needed to survive.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

This year it is to assist with the building of the Bat Castle which will help protect the bats as their current roosting structures disappear (which are old buildings that are slated to be torn down in the near future.) Also I want to support Bat World to help save bats from succumbing to White Nose Syndrome.

What would you tell others about this organization?

I'd tell them that this organization is made up of volunteers who take no salaries and who are devoted to helping bats and that their donations will go 100% to the bats. And that this organization not only does hands on rehabilitation of the bats but offers incredible educational opportunities to the public. This is something that is very important if bats are going to survive. Ignorance and the lack of good information is a big detriment to the future of bats and Bat World is making great strides educating the rest of us not only locally but globally through their efforts on facebook, their website on the internet, their newsletters and through their regional offices.
