Women's Media Center
May 25, 2010

Women's faces are now seen regularly reading television news, but when it comes to being interviewed as experts or as guests on the powerful political talk shows, fewer than 20% are women. WMC is changing that by training a new generation of progressive women to be effective media pundits. WMC also monitors media of all kinds and "pitches a fit" (mobilizes activists to complain) when sexism rears its ugly head, as it still does often. WMC is doing a focused, targeted job that no other organization is doing with such visibility and success.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I took Progressive Women's Voices training to see what I could learn even though I have extensive media experience and so when I am asking donors to support WMC, I can speak authoritatively about the quality of the work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Its work is so needed!! Other nonprofits that do good work for women completely overlook the importance of the media narrative in the culture. So they can't make real change because they don't change the media story or get the visibility to be effective.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Passionate, committed, competent

Jewish Women's Archive

I love that the JWA is telling the stories of women doers and activists, many of whom have not been recognized publicly before. I love that it is frankly feminist in its perspective and that it melds the woman's Jewish story with her secular story--no other group does that yet each of us is a tapestry of these cultural threads. And if you haven't seen the excellent video about Jewish comediennes, "Making Trouble", get it right away--you're in for a treat.
