Healing Heroes Network, Inc.
March 12, 2012

WOW! What a wonderful organization. As the wife of a wounded warrior (injured in 2005), I have seen more red tape than the red tape manufacturer! Imagine my surprise and delight when I made one phone call asking for help and encountered no tape, just a group of wonderful people who wanted to help us get the treatment my husband so desperately needed but is not provided through the military, VA or approved for health insurance to pay.
After I spoke with Sarah Richards I discovered all I needed to do was fill out a simple application and provide proof that my husband served in combat. Easy enough! I sent the information to Healing Heroes Network the next day, within the next couple of days the board had reviewed and approved my husband to be funded for Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment. I also need to thank Stephanie Whitman for seemlessly taking over for Sarah in the middle of the process. My husband has a traumatic brain injury, seizure disorder, post-traumatic stress, reflex sympathetic dystrophy and a few other ailments. Over the past six years we have tried everything the medical doctors prescribed from the way too many meds to all the therapies they could think of – psychotherapy, biofeedback, speech therapy, occupational therapy and the list goes on. Some of this did help my husband, but he was still just a shell of the man he was prior to his injury. He was broken physically and mentally.
In 2009, we saw our first ray of hope when we were able to get him HBOT. The results of this amazing treatment were immediate and after 40 treatments he just continued to improve. I finally a semblance of the man I married. We were crushed when the military denied our request for 40 more treatments to complete the prescribed 80 treatments. I am a very determined retired Master Sergeant myself and trust I tried everything to get him this treatment to no avail.
Over the next two years, Mark started doing so much better and kept improving over several months. He then leveled out and stayed there for almost two years. Unfortunately, the results started to fade. His cognitive thinking declined, his speech problems returned, he was having more and more seizures, and he was in constant pain.
I knew our only hope was getting him into a hyperbaric chamber and I knew the military, the VA and Tricare was still denying our wounded warriors of this amazing, life-changing treatment. So I went on the hunt for a non-profit that might be able to help us out.
I found Healing Heroes Network and made the call. Within a month, Mark started his first of 40 treatments. He is not even half-way through yet and is already showing great improvements. He can carry on a real conversation, his seizures are decreasing and his pain is subsiding. I expect to see more improvements over the duration of his treatments and for several months to come. We now know that he will need to get follow up HBOT to retain all the improvements and I have no doubt that Healing Heroes Network will be there for us the next time we call.
Thank you Healing Heroes Network for giving me back my husband and for all you do for so many other wounded warriors and their families.

Thank you and God Bless,
CeCe Gwathmey
