Review for Psychiatric Service Dog Society, Arlington, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This is a wonderful organization that provides guidance, training support, and performs research for people using Psychiatric Service Dogs. These are dogs that are trained to assist people with disabling mental illness like our returning Veterans with PTSD, people with bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder etc. There is currently a paid staff of only two individuals.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my survival. Without a psychiatric service dog and the support in obtaining and training one from PSDS I probably would not be alive today- and I certainly wouldn't be about to get my PhD at Berkeley!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to obtain more funding for manning the phones and offering printed materials so that more time could be spent on performing research.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the total acceptance and caring I received immediately upon joining.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

all very kind and wonderful to work with.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide more resources for people partnered with psychiatric service dogs, offer training grants, perform more research, and hire people for administrative work so that the president could be more hands on.

Ways to make it better...

there weren't so much stigma from others about mental illness.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding, and discrimination against people with mental illness.

One thing I'd also say is that...

this is a wonderful organization, mostly in need of monetary donations. Due to the nature of the organization, volunteers need to already have some experience with psychiatric service dogs.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
