Girls Write Now, Inc.
October 5, 2009
I have been a consultant with Girls Write Now for the past 3 years, providing support in the area of psychological counseling. Each year the mentors and mentees fill out a questionnaire about their experience in the program. It gives me a good idea of the relationships that have been established between professional female writers and the young female writers from under-served communities. Each year I have been impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm for the writing they are doing and the unique relationships they are forging. More than just teachers, the mentors at 'Girls Write Now' often fill the role of big sister, therapist, surrogate parent and best friend. For young teens from struggling backgrounds who are navigating the NYC public school system towards college the support and guidance provided by GWN is invaluable.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The encouragement everyone shows for
each other and for the students in particular.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Inspired, smart and dedicated to the process of writing and to making a connection with the students.
