I am a novice at crocheting, but I really need something to do with my hands while I am watching sports! Project Linus works for people that want to volunteer at home on their own time, as well as those that want to dedicate scheduled time to events. Some are incredibly artistic, but there is also room for people like me.
My chapter (North and Central Chicagloand) is extremely active with regular group gatherings and is dedicated to creating the best possible blankets to distribute to children that need them. The volunteer events have been a great experience in the ideas that are shared and the encouragement offered all around.

For the past four years, I have volunteered at the Used Book Store, an operation that collects donated books and sells them onsite at in a dedicated space in the library..and on Amazon.com!
I love the books. I enjoy connecting with people over books. It feels great to spend quality time at the library and call it volunteering! (Also, to buy books and call it "fundraising".) This effort has been successful for Friends of the Glenview Library and is a very positive experience for me.

I have volunteered with the Refuge for..a really long time. The group is one of the first in our area to specialize in the rescue and placement of exotic parrots, and has done a lot to educate people. Birds lose their homes the same way that dogs and cats do, but don’t often have the same resources to help them.
The Refuge is diligent in the process of finding the right home for every bird (which I know turns off some people). Until that happens, it is a joy to help keep them safe and comfortable and engaged with the people and animals around them. The other volunteers are all animal lovers and wonderful resources for advice and problem-solving. My experience has been very positive.

I have learned a lot about the care of parrots and the "business" of pet rescue.
