After being laid off from my job of 16 years, I joined the SUCCESS program being run by JFS. It was a wonderful, helpful, supportive program that gave form and purpose to my job search and my life during a difficult transitional time. In addition to the expected supports for resume writing and interview preparation and the like, I believe that the program's key component for me was the one-on-one relationship with a counselor and the backing of the program team. It is critically important for someone who has been thrown into uncertainty to have an individual who cares, is a listening board, a cheer leader and can give advise and counsel. It was directly as a result of my counselor's dogged encouragement to take a step that was outside my comfort zone and that I was reluctant to take, that led directly to a work opportunity that eventually led me back to a full-time position in my field. I will be forever grateful to my counselor, to the SUCCESS team and for the fact that the program was there for me when I needed it.

Structure the one-on-one meeting time with your counselor a little more formally to avoid the ad hoc, post meeting tumult.
