Review for Institute for Curriculum Services, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I well remember the bad old days before ICS was founded. No organization in the Jewish community was dedicated to insuring that publishers heard from a voice whose sole mission was to correct and enhance what was in textbooks and curriculum materials about Jews, Judaism and Israel. Religion was introduced as a formal subject in public elementary school textbooks in 1990. It was then that the problem surfaced clearly.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I have 'kvelled" as this organization has taken on a larger and larger role as a national educational and scholarly entity. As the high quality professional staff has grown, so has national recognitioin of its accomplishments.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff is very , very hard working exhibiting the highest professional standards. The volunteers are intelligent community members who are aware of the importance of how Jews are represented to the 50 million students in American public schools.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Have a presence at every social studies teachers' conference in every state and organize teacher training in school districts so that teachers would have needed background to provide accurate instruction about Jews to their students.

Review for Senior Games, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

I was a volunteer at the Senior Games for 2 shifts in the athlete registration area. My job was to greet the arriving athletes and if there was a line to register at the table where the computer-savy volunteers were operating, to organize the line. From my perspective, the volunteer cadre was well organized. It was enjoyable for me to give the arriving athletes a friendly greeting and direct them to the registration table. Many arrived after a long journey looking dazed and confused. It seemed to reassure them that all was well, they were in the right place and to be greeted and directed to the registration table. It was inspiring to see the senior athletes from all over the country who were so excited to participate in this event. My only suggestion for improvement is that there could have been better signage on campus. Many athletes were very confused about how to find what they were looking for. Also there was a big confusion about parking--who could park in which lot-- and athletes were upset to find their cars ticketed when they believed they could park where they did.
