FAMILY PROMISE-GREATER PHOENIX
September 13, 2011
I have participated in Family Promise through my church for over 10 years now. It is an important ministry to our congregation because it provides an easy way to live our faith: serve those in need in God's house. Four times a year for a week, we host the families at our church overnight, provide them a home-cooked dinner and love and compassion. Because the program serves the families at our church, everyone can participate: families with young and older children, seniors, singles, etc. At the end of every week, we find the families have had a greater impact on us than we have had on them, and it is humbling. The program really works. There is something magical about the Family Promise model, the families move quickly from homelessness to self-sufficiency.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
watching families during host week transition back into self-sufficiency or transitional housing. There is nothing more wonderful than experiencing the joy and feeling of accomplishment when the family members tell you they are leaving the program to move into their very own apartment.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
do more to take what I and my fellow congregants have learned about family homelessness by serving this program and promote policy changes to make this problem a thing of the past.
Volunteer & I prepare and serve meals (dinners or breakfast on Saturday), stay overnight as an evening host and help with set-up and clean-up during host week.
