Review for North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition, Colleyville, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am a NTxPCC BOD member, a support group leader, and a PCa survivor (6Y+). As an organization, we seek new as well as repeat opportunities to educate men and their spouses/SO's about PCa, the value of screening and early detection, various responses to a PCa diagnosis, awareness of support groups who can provide information and support to newly diagnosed, those awaiting treatment, and those who have been treated and may be dealing with ongoing side affects. For the newly diagnosed, our primary objective is to ensure the individual and his loved ones have accurate and complete information with which to make the best decision regarding their own disease and possible future actions to take. For those awaiting treatment, we strive to make them aware of advances in treatment protocols to factor in to their individual decision making process. For those dealing with post-treatment side affects, group members share how they have responded to similar side affects that may be helpful for someone else to consider for themselves. Finally, we actively seek opportunities to reach underserved
groups of men, especially those who may be at high risk for contracting PCa. If we can save even one man's life thru education and/or awareness or help another effectively manage side affects to achieve a better quality of life moving forward, then our organization will have validated its reason for being.

NTXPCC is an aggregation of 8 active PCa support groups in North Texas. Providing educational resources and discussion groups for newly diagnosed men and their families and for the families of PCa survivors or those undergoing various treatments. Most groups meet monthly and provide an outlet for men and their families afflicted with PCa. A number of people attend multiple support group meetings as they are open to all. Most are affiliated with the international Us TOO organization with others affiliated with the ACS Man-to-Man program.

The purpose of the NTXPCC and the several support groups is to encourage men to get screened, get educated and approach their individual situation armed with all the information they need to make the best decision for them and their respective families.

Role:  Board Member & I personally assist with the facilitation of the Baylor-Plano group along with Emily Gentry, a cancer programs coordinator on staff at Baylor-Plano.
