As a member of the JVS staff for more than seven years, I was immensely proud to be a part of an organization that was so effective at developing and implementing innovative services to help an incredible range of people - adults transitioning from welfare to work, refugees, people with disabilities, youth, low-wage workers - find not just jobs but careers. Now that I work at an organization, the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, whose National Network of Sector Partners initiative highlights best practices in workforce development, I find myself referring to JVS frequently as an exemplar and leader for the field and consulting with JVS staff as experts with lessons to share with others around the country.
The Great!
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... having had the chance to make a difference in the lives of many, many people.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... consistently exceptional in their knowledge and commitment.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... help thousands more people along the path to economic self-sufficiency.
Ways to make it better!
- If I ran this organization, I would... get them more funding to continue and expand their most effective services - and to develop new ones.

The National Network of Sector Partners (NNSP) visited DC Central Kitchen in 2009 to learn more about their culinary training program - and came away impressed not only by their ability to help very low-income people with barriers to employment get good jobs but also by their ability to involve industry as partners in delivering the program and providing placements to graduates. We were therefore proud and grateful to include them as a site visit in our recent national conference.
The Great!
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... knowledgeable - both about the needs of participants and about culinary training - and deeply committed to serving those most in need.
Ways to make it better!
- One thing I'd also say is that... we got very positive feedback about a site visit our 2009 conference attendees made to DCCK to learn more about the program.
