I’m Too Young For This!

New York, NY USA

The first four months of my treatment I was in a room full of old people every 3 weeks feeling like there were no other young people with cancer near me. I finally found i[2]Y and realized there was a whole network of young people I could connect with. I listened to the Stupid Cancer show and learned things about my disease and how to help myself. I even got one on one support from the founder himself. I'm now in remission, have 6 more treatments to go, and I'm on facebook and i[2]Y almost every day talking to other people who've had cancer, supporting them and myself. I'm now an activist for young adult cancer, hope to be an ambassador someday, and feel I have a true purpose in life.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... that I can easily be involved in helping other young adults with cancer in so many ways.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... awesome. Mathew Zachary (the founder) is a joy to speak to, obviously truly cares about us in-betweeners, and has great ideas for improving the lives of young adults with cancer.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... have a huge party for every young adult with cancer in the U.S.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... get my local chapter in Los Angeles to be more active!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... getting the word out about young adult cancer. in 30 years the survival rates for young adults with cancer have not gone up, unlike the rates for children and seniors. The challenge for i2Y is changing that statistic and getting every young adult insured

MY ROLE:
I was a General Member of the Public & I've been passing out swag, i.e. pins, stickers, cards, brochures, pens to anyone and everyone I meet.
