Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles, Inc.

Los Angeles, CA

The Volunteer for Literacy is a program dedicated to supporting adult learners and local literacy service providers through volunteer tutors. The only program in greater Los Angeles that brings crucial resources to a wide range of literacy providers such as adult schools, libraries, community-based organizations, and community colleges. This unique program of the Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles collaborates rather than competes with literacy organizations serving adults who struggle with reading. I enjoy working with adults who are highly motivated to empower themselves and to improve their livelihood.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the adults we help. Adults who were in dead-end low wage jobs that are now on a career track, salaried position with benefits. Adults who feel proud of themselves for having accomplished their goal.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... making a difference in people's lives. Empowering adults who had the ability, but not the opportunity. Equipping them with strategies that enabled them to succeed.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... caring and committed. Staff are all too often underpaid and overworked, but nonetheless very passionate and resourceful for the people they serve. They and the other volunteers are inspiring.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the insufficient funding to support adequately the program. Too few staff working on too large of a program that continues to grow each year.

MY ROLE:
I was a Volunteer & I volunteer through the program with adults who seek to obtain jobs with career tracks, benefits, and a livable wage.
