NCLR is a fantastic, results-oriented nonprofit that works for change at the institutional level, winning landmark court cases on behalf of LGBT people.
The Great!
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the victories and sense that it's a matter of when, not if, the LGBT community gains truly equal civil rights.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... smart, passionate, and articulate.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... take on additional discrimination cases.
Ways to make it better!
- If I ran this organization, I would... clone Kate Kendall (a bunch of times)

SVBC is a really effective advocate for those of us using bicycles for transportation. I appreciate their multilevel approach - from teaching safety classes in schools to advocating with transportation agencies for greater accommodation of cyclists to organizing Santa Clara County's Bike to Work Day activities. They have a great website - dedicated volunteers provide updates on construction projects and policy developments in cities in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Volunteering is fun; there's a strong esprit de corps.
The Great!
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the way staff and volunteers stay connected to the joy of riding.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... dedicated, passionate, articulate, and fun.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... raising enough money to support enough staff to do all the education and advocacy work that is needed.(hint: please donate to them)
