United Ministries is an incredible organization. They are transforming people from homeless men on the streets to contributing members of society. These men are encouraged to share their stories. Our church looks forward each year to having a backyard bbq at Earl's Place (United Ministries's transitional housing). We share food, laughs, and stories with the men. We quickly learn that we are not that different than these folks who had a disease such as alcoholism ruin their lives. Once a year a couple of the men will come and speak at our church. We need to do more than just provide a hand-out or write out a check. We need to meet and understand those in need and give them a chance to understand us. I have reviewed their plan to expand and fully support it. Our church has offered our endowment as collateral if necessary because we believe in United Ministries's mission.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... meeting the men who are current clients and those that have "graduated" back in to society.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... They have lower overhead. The money we give goes to the mission. For my 25th wedding anniversary we had a party and asked folks to give gifts to United Ministries. It is a cause I felt good about asking my family and friends to support.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Most of the staff are former clients who can relate to the client's needs. The director, Shelia, is an exceptional person who cares deeply and is an inspiration to everyone.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Expand to support more men and save these men from homelessness. If space allows they could consider women and families also.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... expand their capabilities. Currently they are able to only serve a very small group of men (less than 20 at a time). The need in Baltimore requires more.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... lack of federal funds without huge strings attached that force them to accept folks that have been clean for six months.
